Why Propellers Are Placed Ahead of Rudders

Early propellers offered a major handling advantage over bulky paddle boxes, particularly when ships had to manoeuvre in narrow harbours and confined waterways. That advantage depends on placing the propeller immediately ahead of the rudder.
A rudder can generate steering force only when water flows over it. Propeller wash provides that flow even when the ship is barely moving, then increases the rudder’s effectiveness as the vessel gains speed.
