Why a Ship’s Compass Cannot Work Alone
A ship contains both hard iron and soft iron. Its compass is therefore affected by Earth’s magnetic field, the vessel’s permanent magnetic field, and a changing induced magnetic field.
To obtain a trustworthy heading, navigators must compensate for those unwanted magnetic influences. The first corrections deal with the permanent magnetism built into the ship.
