When Stern Tube Lubrication Fails
If oil overheats, thins, or becomes contaminated with water, the oil wedge collapses. The shaft falls onto the bearing and metal-on-metal friction rapidly raises the temperature.
Thermocouples and wear-down gauges give early warning. If the crew cannot control the problem, the white metal melts, the bearing fails, and the ship loses propulsion.
