The “Fix” That Can Capsize a Ship
A list is corrected by moving ballast to the high side, but doing that to a ship at an angle of loll can trigger a violent roll. The safe remedy is to lower the centre of gravity by adding weight low down, removing weight from above, and controlling free-surface effects.
The vessel must pass through its unstable upright position during recovery, so the work must be deliberate and correctly sequenced. The difference is stark: list is stable uneven loading; loll is instability and loss of self-righting ability.
