Why a Stern Tube Is a Critical Hull Opening

Most underwater openings have valves: if a pipe breaks, the crew closes a valve and isolates the sea. A stern tube cannot work that way because a rotating shaft permanently passes through it.
There is no valve for a spinning propeller shaft. It is a continuous dynamic opening that can only be controlled through its seals, bearings, and pressure balance.
