The Ship Magnet Pulling Your Compass Sideways
A ship built in a particular direction can retain a permanent magnetic field after leaving dry dock. That field can be treated as separate fore-and-aft and athwart ship magnetic components.
The fore-and-aft component does not create deviation when the ship heads north or south, but it weakens or strengthens the compass pull. On easterly and westerly headings, it can push the compass needle away from the true direction.
