Why Two Shafts Do Not Make You Safe
Without propulsion, a ship loses much of its steering ability. In heavy weather it can turn sideways to the waves, a dangerous condition called broaching that may cause cargo to shift and the vessel to capsize.
Twin-screw ships offer redundancy, but a seized shaft still creates drag, poor handling, vibration, possible hull damage, and major repair costs.
